Electronic Ink

Sometime this month Sony is releasing their first electronic ink (e-ink) device.  This device is mainly designed for e-books and other electronic publications.  Sony will also roll out a electronic book store much like iTunes for purchasing e-books for use with the device.

The major advantage the gadget has over PDAs and laptops is its super long battery life.  The only time it actually uses power is when the display changes, such as when turning the page in a book.  They claim that the device will allow you to do 7500 page turns on a single battery charge.

The Sony Reader is estimated to hit the street with a $350 price tag.  I think that this is pretty pricey but like all new devices within a year we should see that come down significantly.  When more competition hits the market I’m hoping these electronic books will get to be under $100.

The e-ink technology is pretty krazy kool. One of the predicted applications using e-ink is a wallpaper that could be changed dynamically.  Could you imagine just pressing a button and watching all the walls in your house change color and/or pattern?  Why stop there?  How about being able to change the color of your car on demand, or even modifying the look of your clothes.  The applications are pretty unlimited.
